{"id":5976,"date":"2021-01-11T07:02:51","date_gmt":"2021-01-11T06:02:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/me2023.linkcph.com\/mission-east-en\/safe-learning-in-tajikistan\/"},"modified":"2025-01-14T13:06:30","modified_gmt":"2025-01-14T12:06:30","slug":"safe-learning-in-tajikistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mission.bybranchout.dk\/en\/tajikistan-en\/safe-learning-in-tajikistan\/","title":{"rendered":"Safe learning in Tajikistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>For the students in the small village of Umarak, attending classes at the local school was a daily risk.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The building was both unsuitable and outright dangerous.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Mission East now made the school day safe with the opening of a brand new school.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new school opened in December 2020, and the timing could not be better:<br \/>\nJanuary is the coldest month in Tajikistan with temperatures that can reach well below zero.<br \/>\nThe old school was uninsulated and therefore so cold that it was decidedly unsuitable for teaching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore it was quite uncomfortable to teach in the old building due to winter harshness.<br \/>\nBut now, the newly constructed school is completely insulated,\u201d says Shokirova Gulchehra, who teaches at Umarak School.<\/p>\n<h2>When the ground shakes<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to being poorly insulated, the old school building was also both dilapidated and not originally built to withstand earthquakes.<br \/>\nWith more than 200 earthquakes recorded in the past year, earthquakes are frequent occurrences in Tajikistan.<\/p>\n<p>Solehzoda Sunhatullo, Head of the Education Department in the Darvoz district of Tajikistan, says:<br \/>\n\u201cThe old school building was vulnerable to both weather and natural disasters such as earthquakes, heavy snowfall as well as fire.<br \/>\nI was always worried about the safety of school children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, local funds were not sufficient to repair the existing building, and local authorities requested Mission East for assistance.<\/p>\n<h2>A brand new school<\/h2>\n<p>Mission East chose to build a brand new building as it was estimated that the cost of repairing the existing building and making it earthquake-resistant would be higher.<\/p>\n<p>After the land was made available by the authorities, work began in early 2020 and now, less than a year later, the school is open and the students are at their desks.<\/p>\n<p>The school is run by the local authorities like the other schools in the area and the school is constructed according to national standards taking all necessary measures into consideration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new school building in Umarak village is disaster resilient and well-isolated. The learning environment has significantly improved,\u201d says Solehzoda Sunhatullo.<\/p>\n<p>As a teacher at the school, Shokirova Gulchehra is also very excited about her new workplace: \u201cTeachers and students alike are happy to teach and learn in a comfortable environment without worrying about the weather&#8217;s harshness.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Facts<\/h3>\n<p>Part of a larger program<br \/>\nThe school building is funded by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg through the <a href=\"https:\/\/patrip.org\/\">PATRIP Foundation<\/a>.
